Introduction

The EU-COLMEV project – “Transformative Education in Energy: Fostering Environmental and Societal Change” is an Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education initiative designed to modernize energy education and strengthen the capacity of higher education institutions (HEIs), particularly in Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela. The project responds to the growing need for skilled professionals in renewable energy and sustainable development while addressing the changing requirements of industry and society. It places particular emphasis on innovation, digitalisation, gender equality, and social inclusiveness in higher education. EU-COLMEV brings together universities and associated industry partners from Latin America and Europe to promote international cooperation and knowledge exchange. The consortium includes universities from Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, Spain, and Sweden, together with a Swedish company specializing in digital education. This collaboration is intended to strengthen links between academia, industry, and society and to ensure that energy education is aligned with real-world challenges and labour-market needs. A central element of the project is the Explore Energy Digital Academy (EEDA), which promotes the collaborative co-creation, sharing, adaptation, and reuse of educational resources. Through this framework, teachers and universities can develop learning modules and integrate them into updated courses and academic programmes. The project combines these resources with flipped classrooms, challenge-based learning, online collaboration, and remote laboratories, enabling students to obtain more practical and student-centred learning experiences.
The project also seeks to address limitations in laboratory infrastructure and access to practical energy education, particularly for students in remote areas. Remote laboratories will allow students to perform experiments online, while challenge-based activities will strengthen interaction with industry and provide opportunities to work on real-world energy and sustainability problems. The project further promotes inclusive education by integrating gender and social-inclusion perspectives into learning materials and activities. Overall, EU-COLMEV aims to create a more collaborative, inclusive, digitally enabled, and industry-oriented model of energy education. By updating curricula, developing innovative learning resources, establishing remote laboratories, strengthening teacher capacity, and promoting international and academia–industry collaboration, the project seeks to improve student competences and employability while contributing to sustainable development and the broader green energy transition.
